            THE 63 426 MAX WEDGE

In 2000 my wife and I restored this 63 Dodge 440 series. Please realize that the 440 designation is just a model number and has nothing to do with engines. In fact in 63 there were no 440 engines

This car is a clone. I already had the 426 and went looking for a 63 2dr hrdtp. I found this one in Alexandria Ontario. It was a 313 (Can 318 version). After locating a BB pushbutton trans I installed the 426 Wedge. Unlike most 426 Max Wedge engines this engine has a single 4 bbl NASCAR intake. There is lots of documentationon these intakes including an article and picture in the 1963 Hot Rod Annual. Most distinguishing factor is it has a cast in tray rathe rthan an open bottom like other B Mopar intakes. This is as i mentioned before a clone and so the numbers matching etc is pointless. It is my driver . I drive it every chance I get.  When i bought it it had 59676 miles on it. As I write this Oct 2006 it has just over 90,000 so it is no trailer queen. I did the engine in my shop and it is approx 500 HP. It has 10.5 to 1 + actual compression ratio and a good stiff hydraulic cam of over .500" lift. It idles at about 1000 RPM. It is a  very strong performer but after much tuning is really not too bad on fuel. Approx 15 MPG (imp gal). In a weak moment I promised it was not for racing and so it does not get to run at the track. (I must have been crazy) The exception was I was allowed to take TV producer Steve Sheahan for a light pass at Shannonville during the making of the OLD RELIABLE DVD.(Available from my Ebay store) It has a 3.91 rear with 285 75 R 15 BFG rear tires.

Taking our "Cruiser" for a cruise.

It was Canadian Thanksgiving Monday. The weather was great, no wind and t'was warm. We rolled the big Dodge out of the garage about 11 oclock and headed for Belleville and then to the 401 Highway. I set out east, heading towards Napanee. Traffic was heavy and moving at unbelievable speed of 70 to 80 MPH. Around Shannonville a newer Porsche pulled along side to play. I realize they are no slouch but this MAX WEDGE with about 500 hp on tap is no milk puppy either so I obliged him for a few minutes until my wife's screaming made me settle down. We were at the Napanee exit about then so I turned off and headed through town. We drove out the back way and rolled along lazily towards Adolphustown. There is a ferry that runs between Adolphstown and Prince Edward County. We waited our turn and drove the 63 on board for the cruise across. The ferry we were on was the Quinte,s Isle. If you ever get to this part of Ontario this is a "Must Do" crossing. Cost? What cost? It is part of the highway and therefore must be provided by law. I hope it is always so.
